Treating Mesothelioma
As the causes for mesothelioma and not proven, there is no specific FDA approved treatment program. The type of treatment for mesothelioma often depends on its location in the body and its stage of development.
Identifying the disease's stage of development is imperative in deciding on treatment. The most common treatments for mesothelioma are surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy.
Chemotherapy is offered as a treatment, but many of the patients report ineffective results. Radiation is offered, and is widely seen as ineffective in curing the disease, but does offer pain relief.
Surgery is used to remove localized mesothelioma. Two surgeries can be done for patients with pleural mesothelioma - pleurectomy or extrapleural pneumonectomy.
