What is Mesothelioma?
Although incidence rates have increased in the past 20 years, mesothelioma is still a relatively rare cancer in which malignant (cancerous) cells are found in the mesothelium, a protective layer covering the majority of the body's internal organs. Mesothelioma seems to be caused by exposure to asbestos, and typically begins in the lungs or stomach.
Even though mesothelioma affects the lungs, it is not a lung cancer.
The first indication of the disease is usually constant chest pain, sometimes accompanied by difficulty breathing, which is caused by the build up of fluid between the lining of the lung and the chest.
A chest x-ray can confirm the existence and growth fluid build up.
